Margie Schuett Named Team Canada’s Chef De Mission for the 2011 XIV World Aquatic Championships in Shanghai, China

Date: 27/04/2010

Calgary, AB - Merlin Edge is very proud to announce today one of our team members, Margie Schuett, has been named Team Canada's Chef De Mission by the Aquatics Federation of Canada for the 14th FINA World Aquatics Championships in Shanghai China, July 16-31, 2011.

"This is the fifth world aquatics championship I've attended, and my third as Chef de Mission," says Ms. Schuett. "The opportunity to work with the best-of-the-best is absolutely inspiring and energizing. To see people pursuing excellence at the highest level with the single minded goal of performing better than they did yesterday is both motivating and humbling to see first hand."

Ms. Schuett has been an enthusiastic supporter of amateur sport for over 30 years at the international level. She was involved with close to two dozen World Championships, as well as winter and summer Olympics, Pan Am Games and Commonwealth Games.

Bill Hogan, President of the Aquatics Federation of Canada, says, "Margie Schuett has a wealth of international experience supporting aquatics at World Championships in the past, and was the heart and soul of Team Canada at the 2009 World Championships in Rome last year.  We at the Aquatic Federation of Canada are so fortunate that Margie has accepted our nomination to be the Chef de Mission for the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai next summer."

As the Chef De Mission, Ms. Schuett will head Canada's aquatic sports delegations and serve as Canada's liaison with China's organizing committee.  In Shanghai, she will be responsible for ensuring the safety and security of Canada's national athletes, coaches and managers from the time the team boards a plane in Canada until the time they return from Shanghai. In addition, Ms Schuett will act as spokesperson for Canada's swimming, water polo, synchronized swimming and diving teams.

Similar to her responsibilities at Merlin Edge, Ms. Schuett will be managing the process of ensuring Canada's athletes have everything they need to achieve their goals. While in China, instead of managing marketing and communications projects, she will be managing hotel accommodations, plus meeting the facilities, transportation and accreditation needs of over 150 people.

"Right now my time is consumed with developing a strategy to meet the needs of the Canadian team when there will be over 100 other countries all asking for similar things from the Organizing Committee at the same time," says Ms. Schuett.  "Logistics, time management, building relationships and managing communications, which is part of my daily life at Merlin Edge, will be key to my success in China."

Ms. Schuett is a long time community service volunteer and experienced sports leader with an extensive background in sponsorship and community investment marketing.  Leveraging her experiences for the World Acquatics Championship in Shanghai is an exciting challenge which Ms. Schuett enjoys and brings an enormous amount of passion and experience to her work for Merlin Edge clients.

Ms. Schuett was featured in the 2001 publication of the McClelland & Stewart publication, "Heroes in our Midst" - a collection of 110 personal stories from Canada's top athletes and sports personalities. These stories offer a private window into a world that few people experience.
